Biodiversity in Sustainability Certification

The possibilities for working with biodiversity on the green facade are extensive. We provide guidance on biodiversity, how it can be supported, and how to communicate your initiatives.

Biodiversity plays an important and significant role in DGNB sustainability certification. With our in-house DGNB consultant on the VERTICAL team, we help you understand the criteria that allow green facades to qualify as habitat. We also advise on how to generally integrate the biodiversity of the green facade into your work with DGNB certification for your building.

In collaboration with our landscape architect and advisors, we ensure that the project’s needs and goals are met in the best possible way. We work with plant selections that provide food sources throughout the entire season — from early spring to late autumn. Planting concepts that include berry-producing species, which contribute to winter food for birds, are among the many options. Structured plantings that support nesting and shelter for birds are also possible.

It is also possible to integrate biodiversity elements into VERTICAL, such as specialised nesting boxes, bat boxes, or insect hotels, if desired.

Communication

If you want to highlight the many added values that a green facade brings, VERTICAL gives you the opportunity to do so in a highly targeted way — with specific figures and data for your own facade, and even across multiple facades if you manage a larger network.

VERTICAL is an intelligent facade with built-in sensors that monitor the green facade’s health and condition 24/7. The control system continuously sends data to Byggros and our operations partner, which we use for daily management. Combined with our extensive knowledge of the plant compositions and the biodiversity they support, this enables us to offer project-specific communication about what is happening on the green facade today — and to highlight the many positive effects,

that the green facade has on the local environment and the area’s biodiversity.

Communication creates awareness, interest in the living green facade, and a sense of ownership among residents, visitors, and passers-by.

You decide whether the communication should be displayed on a monitor inside the building, made publicly accessible, shared on your website or app, or included in an internal report — or perhaps all of them.

Communication of biodiversity is also rewarded within the Danish DGNB sustainability certification.
