Growth element

The elements in VERTICAL are composed of grains with a high absorption capacity, structured so that 30 percent of the total mass in each element consists of cavities. This allows the 12 kg, 500×300×80 mm elements to hold 4 litres of plant-available water each when fully saturated.

Each growth element is clad with a panel that matches the rest of the building facade, and the plants grow out through the openings in the panel. VERTICAL offers five different plant compositions within the facade system.

The elements can be clicked together and assembled into larger panels, which can then be connected to a simple irrigation system. And this is precisely where VERTICAL distinguishes itself from other green walls on the market.

In the eight-centimetre-thick moulded growth element — where the plants in the facade system have their nutritional foundation — nothing is left to chance. Coating entire elements to make them hold together has not been an option.

n the pursuit of creating a hydrological model capable of keeping the entire growth element moist at once, the key has been ensuring that the capillary structures within the elements provide the plant roots with access to both water and oxygen. That formula has been found, and it forms the foundation of the system’s innovation and reliability.

The plant root systems can easily move across elements once the modules are connected. This results in more robust facade plants compared to plants installed in individual pots, pockets on geotextile, or planter boxes, where the roots have limited space to spread.

In addition to simplifying the irrigation process, the modular construction provides another advantage — time on the construction site is minimised, and thus the overall costs are reduced.

The VERTICAL growth element is the latest innovation in the market for next-generation green facades — developed through a four-year testing period in BG Byggros’ development department, BG Innovation Lab.

If the solution had been made with, for example, geotextiles, it would not have been possible to achieve uniform moisture from top to bottom with a single irrigation line.
